Buses in Assisi: Line C Routes, Stops, Tickets and Timetables

The Assisi Link, Line C connects Assisi railway station in Santa Maria degli Angeli with the hilltop historic centre. It serves the main visitor stops, including Piazza Unità d’Italia, Parcheggio Giovanni Paolo II, Porta Nuova and Piazza Matteotti.

If you’re arriving from Rome, our Rome to Assisi by train and bus guide explains how to book your train and what to expect at the station. This guide picks up from there: it covers Line C, where to board, which stop to choose and how to pay.

How to get from Assisi station to the historic centre

Assisi railway station is in Santa Maria degli Angeli, below the hilltop town. The Line C bus leaves from the station forecourt. When you exit, follow the signs to the bus bays and check the destination displayed on the bus.

The route runs from Assisi station through Piazza Unità d’Italia and Parcheggio Giovanni Paolo II, then continues to Porta Nuova and Piazza Matteotti. The ride to the historic centre takes about 10 minutes, depending on the service and your stop.

Which Line C stop should you choose?

Piazza Unità d’Italia and Parcheggio Giovanni Paolo II
These stops are convenient for the Basilica of Saint Francis and nearby accommodation. From this lower part of the historic centre, the streets rise steeply towards the central piazzas.

Porta Nuova
Choose Porta Nuova for the Basilica of Saint Clare and the central area. It can be a convenient place to start exploring, depending on your hotel’s location.

Piazza Matteotti
Piazza Matteotti is at the upper end of the route. It may be the best stop if your accommodation is in the upper part of Assisi.

Assisi has steep streets, uneven paving and stairways. Consider the walk from the stop to your accommodation, especially if you have luggage. If you’re unsure, show the driver your destination address and ask which stop is most convenient.

Assisi bus tickets and how to pay

Busitalia currently lists the ordinary urban ticket at €1.30, valid for 90 minutes from its first validation. A ticket bought on board costs €2.00.

  • Contactless card or phone: Tap the reader when you board and wait for the green confirmation light. Each card or device pays for one passenger.

  • Ticket bought before boarding: Validate it as you enter the bus.

  • Ticket bought from the driver: The current fare is €2.00.

If you change buses within the 90-minute validity period after paying contactless, tap again when boarding the next bus. Busitalia says a transfer tap within that period does not purchase an additional ticket.

Train and bus ticket together

If you’re arriving by train and plan to take Line C, Trenitalia offers a combined ticket. Select Assisi Centro as your destination when booking; the bus portion from Assisi railway station is currently listed at €1.30.

If you plan to take a taxi instead, buy your train ticket without the bus add-on. For taxi contacts and local fares, see our Assisi taxi fares guide.

Check the Line C timetable for your travel date

Line C has separate timetables for Monday–Saturday and for Sundays and public holidays. Some departures also have school-day or Saturday restrictions, so don’t assume that every listed bus runs every day.

Use the downloadable timetable to check the departure from your stop and the direction of travel. The PDF keeps the operator’s Italian stop labels. For example:

  • ASSISI STAZIONE means Assisi railway station.

  • S.FRANCESCO ASSISI is the San Francesco stop.

  • P.MATTEOTTI ASSISI is Piazza Matteotti.

Choose the correct direction and service-day table, find your stop in the left-hand column, then read across to find a departure. Each column represents one bus trip; read down that column to follow its times at later stops. A dash means no time is listed for that stop on that trip. The PDF also explains the service codes shown above some departures.

Taking Line C back to Assisi railway station

For the return journey, board Line C in the direction of Via Ermini. You can use the same stops where you arrived: Piazza Unità d’Italia, Parcheggio Giovanni Paolo II, Porta Nuova or Piazza Matteotti. Check that the bus is going to Assisi Stazione before boarding.

Choose your train first, then check the bus timetable and leave enough time to reach the station. Aim to arrive around 20–30 minutes before your train leaves. If you’re returning to Rome, our Rome to Assisi train and bus guide explains how to check whether your train changes at Foligno.
